On October 28, 2015, today, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) will unveil a new resource guide for designing urban streets around the world: the Global Street Design Guide.
The Global Street Design Guide (GSDG) sets a new global baseline for designing urban streets. It shifts the parameters of designing urban streets away from catering to automobile movement and safety, to prioritize access, safety and mobility for all users; environmental quality; economic benefit; enhancement of place; public health and overall quality of life.
The Global Designing Cities Initiative produced the new guide with support from a Global Expert Network with representation from 68 cities and 39 countries around the world, building upon NACTO’s Urban Street Design Guide and Urban Bikeway Design Guide. NACTO says, “the GSDG has been created for global cities, by global cities.”
